is media a message or a tool?
it has been debated for long.
I think that if the media is something that is new and creative and that new method engages new ways of perception, then media can become a message. Otherwise, media remains just as a tool.

quotes
"We are all", as the greate composer Karlheinz Stockhausen once said, "transisters, in the literal sense." ...
People always think they are in the world, but they never realize that they are the world. ...
We send, recieve and organize, and when no longer capable of sustaining these three functions, we disintegrate and die. ...
There are no phenomena in the natural world that do not manifest themselves as vibratory or rhythmic phenomena. Those vibrations attack us; they modulate us and, in the end, become us. ...
Life is a case of maintaining a very delicate structure- ourselves- a significant distance from equilibruim at nearly all times, and the others -in order to evolve, grow and invent - very far from equilibrium indeed. ...
-Introduction from Far from Equilibrium, by Sanford Kwinter-
‘Intuition—creative emotion—is an internal force that life carries within itself and it is the positive dynamic of being.’
-Henri Bergson-

idea
I want my work to be intuitive but rational
I want my work to make sense
I want to rethink of my ideas, in my deep heart really "why" I want to do this, even before thinking of the result.
and I just came with this idea
"I didn't know that a caterpillar was living inside my computer. "

crit
to be an artist is to live bit more sensitively.
to win the strong is to use weakness and invite the strong's for their participation.
these are my insights from Johnathan Harris's talk, its religious obligated rather than programmatic.

how to make this work
Texture
I am stuck.
But I am trying to get the textures drawn now.
A lot of my other projects involves texture.
I don't know why, but maybe that is my issue now, of virtual textures, which gives a more Blahblah blah feeling. (hard to explain in English! )
What I am looking at, and getting inspired from are clothes, especially fabric pattern designs from Alexander MCQueen. Somehow they look from inspired from the nature, and from 19th century Victorian era, which might match well with my steam punk theme.

comments from the mid-term review
1. Do something, beyond research.
2. Making the interface intuitively obvious would be the next step
3. Think of a clown making animals out of balloon. Something like that?

Projecting on a surface
These days, I am interested in projection on surfaces.
I want to make a surface that looks like a generative figure and project on top of it.
I need to know what technique and how to do mapping.
Such as this

Thesis plan
What I should do by the end of this semester
1. Make a Doll House
2. Physical Test
3. Make at least 1 Creature Behavior
4. Design Sketches
Ways to draw : Max, Maya pre render call up?
Can use : GLSL (GL shading language)
NPR
Shader (Load shaders)
Unity : 3D engine based on Javascript.
Blender : not good for interactive.

inspirations for forms
I got a crit from Jean Pierre Hebert
Interesting thing was that he is a really traditional side of an artist. He prefers things to go slow down, and let us think. Even with interactive works.
Liubo actually gave me some good inspirations for the generative images.

My thesis concept
I just was not sure whether my thesis concept was strong enough. I just felt the connection between the interface, result, interaction, all together was not obvious enough.
Liubo rent me the book "The book of Imaginary Beings" by Jorge Luis Borges.
From this, I got the idea that I can mix up mythology, subconsciousness, surrealistic imaginative world with digital media.
Let's start up!

Post Modern
It might sound irrelevant with my thesis, but I love Hudson Hotel Bar in Columbus Circle.
I think it is cool and also postmodern. All different kind of design styles merged together, sometimes, remaking a designed object inspired from an existing artwork, absurd but interesting environment is created. Escalator by Philip Stark, the floor and the ceiling upside-down, by floor shinning light, chandelier designed by Ingo Marue, showing holographic light images within a real chandelier holder, but actually not having any functional light, reminds me of "This is not a pipe" by Rene Margrit, a goat head in the wall reminds me of Robert Rausengberg, and all different style chairs mixed up (Wooden Chair by Droog Design, Plastic chair "le chaise" by the Eames, etc.... Everything is sooo cool.
I think somewhere between absurd and making sense, all mixed up together is fun and cool in some extent, creating a tension.
Or maybe it is just my happiness.

conceptual art
I like conceptual art. I want my works also to be more conceptual.
The idea that I am getting interested in is "de-materializaion".
I am trying to read and understand what does this means, through Lucy R. Lippard's book "Six Years".
Also, I am trying to understand what is Aura, does it really exists, is it really important to think of Aura, on the era of digital, when everything is so virtual and conceptual?
I want to know more of Roy Ascott's idea towards digital art. Is digital art really a medium to project our subconscious desire, and can it be a surreal world? But why do I feel so vacant?
I am also getting interested in Joseph Beuys. I just love his idea of what is art, what social role should art do. Also I like his work that is free from any form, free from any visuals, creators. His idea of social sculpture is also what I think I can expand through digital communicative technology.
But maybe I am just thinking tooo much. I should just start to do something.
From now on, this is my goal.
Read 1 book per week.
Idea sketch 1 hour per day.
Go to dumbo studio 1~2 days per week.
Make something at least 1 per a month.
And this is my another blog that I am writing for my interaction design class.
